There are a few ways we can save money if we are on a fairly tight budget and that is to make Chicken Nesting Boxes or Laying Boxes ourselves.

Although keeping Chickens at Home, as Pets, or, as is more often the case, for only a few years while they are productive Egg Layers, is not expensive but all costs add up. Although I would be loath to use anything for a Laying Box that was wooden, if you want to make a Chicken Nesting Box for minimal money then old, small wooden crates may be ideal for a while. The only problem with wooden containers for Chickens to lay Eggs in is the difficulty in cleaning. On the other hand you may have a pile of such things so that would make them ideal.

One of my preferred Chicken Laying Boxes is an old washing up bowl. I would simply cut the front out to make it easy for the Chicken to walk straight in to the bowl and lay. They work very well and have the added advantage of being very easy to clean. It takes seconds to clean the Nesting Box.
