Chicken owners are often asked by those who have just got Chickens or who are thinking about it how to go about choosing nesting boxes for Chicken or Chickens that they may own or will do soon. For some it seems like a big question and for others it is of little concern.
Some Chicken owners do little more than pile sawdust on the floor and leave it at that. Others will be looking at state of the art Chicken Nesting Boxes that promise to deliver high quality comfort and can keep the Eggs clean and away from the Bird. Of course some Chicken owners want their nesting Boxes to keep the Eggs right there as they want the Hens to go broody. When we say Nesting Boxes for Chicken sometimes we mean nothing of the sort. We mean Chicken Laying Boxes.
Nesting Boxes For Chicken?
The two have become quite interchangeable but can lead to misunderstanding and complications because of the terminology used. I am as much to blame as the next Man, the title of this site is Chicken Nesting Boxes, partly a sneaky act on my part, and partly because I know it can mean both Laying and Nesting to may. I say sneaky because so many people search for Chicken Nesting Boxes rather than Chicken Laying Boxes. If you came here via the latter then Hello to you, you are right but not in the majority of the searchers who are actually really looking for what you are.
Nesting Boxes for Chicken, or Chickens come in such a wide range it really is quite surprising and we will be looking at the differences soon enough, probably in the next post or so. How you go about choosing the right Box for your Eggs to be layed in will be down to a variety of factors, including the space of the Chicken Coop, if it really is a Nesting Box or is just for Chicken Egg Laying. If it is just for laying then it probably doesn't need quite as much consideration as the Chicken will be spending minimal time in it.
Make Chicken Nesting Boxes Easy To Clean
One thing I would always say, no matter what you end up supplying for your Chickens to lay in is that it should be easily cleaned. This is pf prime importance as far as I am concerned as it makes life so much easier. You want something that can be cleaned quickly and easily and doesn't take to much work to do so.
Plastic or Metal would be my choice because of this. However if you have a number of throwaway Crates or Bowls that can easily be converted to Chicken Nest Boxes then that may be the way to go.
Either way Choosing Nesting Boxes for Chicken or Chickens should be done bearing all the previous in mind.

I am planning on building nesting boxes with a slanted floor so that eggs will roll out the back. I can find no information on this. There is a commercialy made one that has a mat on the floor. Do you have any suggestions? Dennis
Hi Dennis
I think it should be fairly easy to build. I don't have any plans though but I am sure with a bit of guesswork it won't be that difficult to build.
Alternatively why not just place something under the front to lift the nesting box up slightly?
